Green Initiatives

Rabbi Jonathan Hausman often quotes an ancient midrash that, “When God created the first human beings, God led them around all the trees of the Garden of Eden and said: ‘Look at My works! See how beautiful they are—how excellent! For your sake I created them all. See to it that you do not spoil and destroy My world; for if you do, there will be no one else to repair it.'"

Jewish philosophy and thought tell us to be good stewards of our one earth. ATC supports that philosophy through its Green Initiatives, actions which are designed to be sustainable, or to lower our carbon footprint.

To date, these are the green initiatives carried out by our congregation and staff:

  • Recycling of all recyclable materials, such as cans, bottles, plastics, paper, cardboard
  • Use of earth-friendly cleaning materials

In addition, the synagogue is planning to:

  • Compost all compostable materials from our kitchen, such as fruit and vegetable scraps
  • Create a garden in the backyard, utilizing our garden compost
  • Use our garden as a teaching tool for our religious school children
  • Harvest and cook produce from our garden for events at ATC
